ABOUT DR. SANDRA HAZLELIP
Dr. Sandy, as many of her patients call her, was born in Texas and has lived there most of her life.
She married Don Hazelip in 1961 and their marriage was blessed with three children. When their son, Larry, was thirteen months old, he developed diabetes. While learning all she could about diabetes in order to better care for their son, Sandy developed not only a keen interest in diabetes but also medicine in general. When their oldest child was about to start to high school, Sandy timidly told her husband that she wanted to become a doctor. He encouraged her from the first moment she told him, but, there was a major hurdle: Sandy had never been to college. She had worked while Don went to college to prepare for his profession as a Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A.) and then had been busy with their three children, but now she had a burning desire to become a physician. So, at the age of 34, she enrolled in college. She graduated from college at age 39 and then started medical school. |
Dr. Sandy and Don moved to Eastland, Texas, to establish her medical practice in December 1985. In 1999, she experienced the devastating loss of her husband when he died from complications of Hepatitis A.
She is board certified in both Family Medicine and Geriatrics. She enjoys the challenges of geriatric patients and feels the Lord has called her to work with patients who are in the “November and December” of their lives, and she limits her practice to the very frail and elderly patients in nursing homes.
In addition to her medical practice, Dr. Sandy has added other dimensions to her life. She is an author and international lecturer and has spoken in the United States, Cambodia, China, Germany, Croatia, Romania, Russia, and Zambia on women’s health issues as well as sharing her love for the Lord as a speaker at Ladies’ Programs in those countries just as she is doing today.
Most of all, she enjoys her grandchildren and for the past 16 years has had the great pleasure of taking them on short term mission trips to Zambia, Russia, China, Cambodia, and Romania.
