Adding Insight to Injury - The Human Body

Psalms 139:14: I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
By Jamali Jack (Kingstown Church of Christ, SVG)
It’s an athlete’s worse nightmare – an injury. Preventing them from performing at 100%. Sometimes, an injury or illness is relatively minor and does not threaten the ability to play. Great competitors often show their determination in the face of these situations and perform above and beyond the call of duty, à la Michael Jordan’s now legendary Flu Game in the 1997 NBA Finals.

Other times, injuries are more serious and prevents the ability to play altogether. Not being able to play definitely adds insult to injury, as any true athlete can hardly bear to look at the game he/she loves while not being able to participate. However, it is still possible in these times to learn important lessons that can prove valuable post-injury. These lessons I learned while in a full leg cast during the early part 2010 as I recovered from an injured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) that was the result of trauma to the right knee.

One such lesson (insight) that I would like to share from that injury is: The human body is truly a remarkable creation. With an adult average of just over 200 bones, an estimated 75 – 100 trillion cells and multiple complex organ systems all working in unison to inform, protect and replenish the body, it is indeed a testament to the wisdom of an all-knowing Creator. Being somewhat of a tech geek, I can appreciate the industrial design and technological expertise that goes into the latest devices, but these can never compare to the wonder that is the human body.

Basketball, like other forms of exercise, is a good way to enable the body to reach its full physical capacity. Whenever, LeBron, Kobe or D.Wade make that amazing move that becomes an instant highlight, we should not think only of their athletic creativity, but more importantly we should acknowledge the Creator who gave them the body that makes it all possible. Regardless to the amount of exercise however, our physical bodies will not last forever. The apostle Paul writes, For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. (I Timothy 4:8)

The humility that is required to come to this realisation is as much a product of the heart as it is of the mind. It is regrettably that otherwise intelligent people can justify a theory as absurd as evolution. If you or someone you know falls into this category, I would respectfully ask that you carefully examine the evidence.
Acts 17:26: And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

Hebrews 11:1-3 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
